Patient Transport and How to Be Prepared in Case of an Emergency

This past year, we seemed to have been plagued by all types of natural disasters. There were hurricanes, flooding, wildfires and earthquakes featured throughout news casts. Many people lost their homes and had to evacuate at a moment’s notice. During a natural disaster or other emergency situation, it can be extremely difficult trying to transport everyone at once, and under erratic conditions, it may seem as if it is near impossible. The one thing all of these disasters and emergencies have in common is the first responders working tirelessly to help their community and overcome all of these immense obstacles. They have to be prepared and have the proper equipment to tackle all of these issues and get everyone out safely. Here is a look at some of the things these first responders have to deal with.

  • Water. Flooding has had a major impact on the US this year. Many people were forced to evacuate, and a good percentage of these evacuees required assistance to evacuate. This scenario leaves first responders in a dangerous situation. It is unsafe to drag heavy, bulky equipment, like gurneys and stretchers, through flood waters. You want first responders to be able to move freely and quickly, which means it is impossible to carry the normal transport devices.

  • Debris. Hurricanes, tornadoes and other storms with high winds can stir up all kinds of debris. The clean up after many storms can take weeks or even months. It may take some time to clear the roads, which means first responders will have to deal with unfavorable conditions. Some places will be blocked by fallen trees and other debris. The wheels of a gurney is unable to maneuver through this debris. These conditions ensure that most evacuees will have to be carried in order to safely evacuate them.

  • Limited Resources. In most emergency situations and natural disasters, you will find limited resources. Most hospitals, emergency care centers and first responders will find themselves being overworked and filled to the brim. These situations and circumstances can become extremely hectic to all those involved. In order to make the process go as smoothly as possible, first responders will need lightweight, compact equipment that will not slow or weigh them down but still do the job.

The MegaMover Portable Transport Unit and MegaMover Plus sold by Mobi Medical Supply is ideal for use during natural disasters and other emergency situations. These units are compact and lightweight. These units fold easily and weigh less than one pound, which is essential to helping first responders maneuver through the difficult terrain of an emergency situation. These lightweight yet durable devices can easily carry up to 1000 pounds.
