A booming career path for millennials seems to be centered around the mortuary industry. The younger generation seems to be bringing some vital energy, fresh perspectives and technological innovations to the everyday funeral home processes. And, unlike many others, this new group of people does not carry the typical fear, horror, or doom and gloom mentality that death seems to bring to the majority of the population. This new generation of funeral directors promises to bring a new look to the traditional funeral ceremony and some much-needed advancements in the IT sector of the mortuary industry.
Many of the older generation funeral directors are happy for the influx of younger funeral directors. They hope to see them use their tech savviness to help the funeral industry grow and evolve into something more. Remember back in the good old days the only way to know that someone had died is to get a phone call or letter from someone in the family, or you had to check the newspaper. Now you can look online at obituaries or message a large group of people through Facebook and other social media sites. Other high-tech elements can be extremely useful too, such as electronic guestbooks, online obituaries and digital donation pages where you can forgo flowers and directly donate to the favorite charity of the deceased.
This newer generation of funeral directors also wants to help the public view funerals in a new way. They want to take away all those taboo and scary feelings about death and transform them into something more peaceful. They hope to create town hall type meetings to help educate others on how to deal with the death of a loved one and help quell the fear surrounding our own impending death. They also hope to use their tech skills and have podcasts, YouTube videos and TED Talks that centers on answering and explaining in depth all of the different aspects of death. These talks are all part of an effort to help people feel more comfortable with their own death and see that it is not all doom and gloom like they once believed.
The influx of millennials to the mortuary industry can have a significant positive impact for all of those involved. Hopefully, their positive spirit and tech savviness can bring about a more peaceful and comfortable experience for everyone involved in the death process. With their eagerness and fresh perspective, there is no telling what the future may hold for the funeral industry.
